Description

The Maple Lodge Farms Special Event Team is taking a little road trip this summer...make that a BIG road trip...about 7,000 kilometres wide of a road trip to be exact. From July 4 to August 3 2010, Grant, Kim, Cassandra, Natalie, Mike and Josh - 6 wicked young people from the GTA - will be hitting all the major cities across Canada, hosting free BBQs at grocery stores and head offices that Maple Lodge is in partnerships with. Traveling in a 70 foot tractor trailer from hotel to hotel, they're on a mission to get the nation hooked on chicken. So stop by this blog daily to see where they are, what they're up to, and maybe YOU will start craving an Ultimate Chicken Dog too.

Canola Fields Forever

And so ends the first major leg of our trip! After four full days of driving, we've arrived in Saskatoon, and we're all rather excited to be staying in one place for more than a day.

The only issue is, unlike the other hotels we've slept in so far, this one is lacking the WOW factor. In fact, it's lacking many things: the pool and hot tub are closed for renovations, continental breakfast isn't included, and although I've never been to jail, I imagine that this hotel room I'm writing from isn't too far off from what I might find there.

...ok, so maybe that's pushing it. Afterall, the bed is comfy and the water's hot. Plus, Mike was actually able to hook up his PS3 this time because the TV's are so outdated! Who needs a swimming pool? We be gamin'!

The 800+ clicks we drove today moved us into another time zone, so we're now two hours behind Toronto. We got here at about 8:00 Saskatoon time, and after picking up our product at the warehouse, Grant and I ventured in the Flex to buy lettuce, tomatoes and mayo in preparation for wrap making for an estimated crowd of 800 people tomorrow.

Now, it's not everyday that a cashier at Safeway gets to check out ten heads of lettuce and six squeeze bottles of mayonnaise for one customer.

"It's our Grandma's 90th birthday!" said Grant - of course - when the cashier gave us a rather confused smile.

We had her going for a bit, but we eventually told her the real story of who we were and what we were up to. Turns out, she's going on vacation in about a week to Kelowna, then over to Vancouver Island on the ferry.

"Look out for us then!" we both said, "Cuz we are too!"

Ha! This trip really is a Canadian expedition!

And each new province we see on this cross-nation journey brings another spectacular sight.

Today, it was just outside of Saskatoon that Grant pulled over on the side of the highway. There were no rock walls, surrounding forests, or cliffs to gaze down from this time. (The Prairies are indeed flat as they say.) We stopped beside a lake this time. Opposite the lake, on the other side of the highway, was a field of canola flowers...

Let me rephrase that. Across from the lake, on the other side of the highway, was a vast panorama of dancing yellow plants swaying in the rich gusts of warm air under the widest, bluest sky I've ever seen.

Instead of swimming in the lake, we took a dip in the flowers. I honestly squealed out loud in excitement. Such a cool feeling being in a sea of knee-high flowers!!!

And that about BBQ-Brown-Sugar Wraps up day four folks ;)

Tomorrow is event ONE! We'll be at Greystone Co-op at 10 a.m. for a great day of Maple Lodge eats, Plink-o, and all the chicken tattoos you can fit on one arm.

That's the great thing about this summer adventure - Grant, Josh, Natalie, Cassandra, Mike and I are working right now. This is our summer job, and the money we're making will no doubt be leaving our bank accounts shortly to pay for school and rent and car insurance and so many other expenses.

But when you stop to think about it, we're throwing BBQs and giving smiling, toothless kids chicken tattoos and colouring books! We're meeting new people and seeing awesome sights daily! We're taking pictures by fields of canola flowers and mountain edges!

We're driving across Canada, and the windows are rolled all the way down.

"I'm really happy I decided to do this," said Josh, back in the Showtruck after our floral experience.

Me too.

  1. Apparently, CANOLA is the reason for runny honey !!!! did you know that??? The Bees are also dancing and dipping in these seas of knee-high flowers and adding it to their hives. THUS, runny honey!! (This tidbit of information came from my 90-year old aunt.)

  2. Canola used to be called rapeseed. Tisdale, Saskatchewan had a motto that the plastered on the signs that welcomed you to town "Tisdale - Land of Rape and Honey." You can't make this stuff up!!
